There is a book I read recently called Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs.  This novel was written around some very creepy old found photographs that I would like to use for the revisited and revised project.  Below are some of the photographs that the narrative to the novel was written around.

Project Two Proposal

John Plankinton moved to Milwaukee in 1844.  He became the father of meatpacking in the midwest, partnering with with many early industrialists of the time, such as Phillip D. Armour, Patrick Cudahy, and Frederick Layton.  After he became established in his industry, he became a local politician, philanthropist, and property owner.  In 1868 he built the Plankinton House Hotel, which was one of the largest in the city at the time.  In 1915 The Plankinton House Hotel was torn down to make way for the John Plankinton Building.  Originally a two story building, an additional 5 stories were added in 1924 bringing the building to its current height.  The building is now housed by The Grand Avenue Mall on floors one and two. The Plankinton Loft Apartments on floor three.  The YMCA on floors four and five.  The UWM School of Continuing Education owns a quarter of the fifth floor, and all of the sixth and seventh floors.  Being a shift manager in Conference Services for SCE, I spend a lot of time in the Plankinton Building, and plan on exploring it photographically for project two. 

To start out working on this project my main focusing points will be on the space from the fifth floor that SCE uses as storage (the only portion of the building that has not been modernized in the last 50 years), and the recent removal and repairs being done to a bronze statue of Plankinton that has sat in the building since its inception (I do not yet know the exact age of the statue, though I have heard both 144 and 126, so I have a ballpark time to search). 

Assignment 1

 

For this assignment I chose to photograph myself and my sister.  I compared through our choices of clothing and objects in our living spaces, how similar or different we are, and in what ways.  I started off by asking her what her two most comfortable places are, now that she has moved to a new city.  Her response was that she is most comfortable in her living room, and her car: I then photographed her in those two spaces.   I asked myself the same questions, and photographed myself in my living room, and bedroom.  For this project, I chose not to include either of our faces, because I did not want that to be the focusing point of the project.   I did not want anyone to get caught up on any familial similarities, only the similarities that we have control over. 

For this project I was unable to shoot much since my sister has been out of town.  I will be shooting with her this weekend and will post more images as soon as I can.

Proposal for Project 1

For project 1 I would like to explore the differences and similarities between my sister Melissa and myself. I would also like to look into some recent transitions in my sisters life.  She recently graduated from college and has started working a full time job, I think this would be interesting to look at in comparison to my life, which is as an active student. I am hoping to shoot images in both my sister and my apartments, as well as on campus, and in her office. Hopefully through this project the audience will have an understanding of our relationship.

For the technical aspects I plan on shooting with my DSLR in color, and am leaning towards printing my final images as 8 by 10.
